20 Years and Counting.....Chapter 2

After seeing a few museums in Amsterdam and also visiting the Ann Frank House we flew over to Basel and had some time to kill.  We checked into the AmaKristina and requested two bikes to go into town.  It's great having GPS on your phone to get us around town.

It was a very unseasonably warm day in Basel and everyone was in the water.  Apparently, this part of the Rhine is acceptable for swimmers and boaters.  We found a little floating island curbside that locals would swim and sunbathe.  There are no beaches in the area so they made a man made one.


Because the weather was warm, I packed all the wrong clothing for our trip.  I made due with what I had and mixed and matched the best I could.  Good thing the ship had laundry service at very reasonable rates.

Amawaterways did a great job welcoming us onboard and our fellow shipmates were a blast. Several from Canada, Mexico City, Oklahoma, Dallas, and Brazil.  It was a new experience to listen to all the different languages on board.  As well as seeing the staff speak all of them fluently.  French, German, English, Spanish.

We sailed at night and arrived into Breisach the next day on a beautiful Sunday morning.  This town was the model for Disney's Beauty and the Beast's provincial town.  They definitely lived up to the task.  What a gorgeous little town.  Shop windows full of pastries and bread, a Christmas store, and numerous other mom and pop shops.

Every day we would return to the ship for lunch, a nap and then for some socializing on the sun deck or poolside.  What a life those two weeks were.  Meanwhile, back in our home state, all hell was breaking loose.

A pretty good and "normal" life by any standards.  A real suburban dream, however, there is not much growth in a bubble and as we all know our circumstances are not shared by all. Belize? Yes, Please!!

We arrived at the Sleeping Giant Rainforest Lodge around 5:30 pm, after a very pleasant drive thru the towns of Balmopan, (capital of Belize) and Armenia. We were scheduled for a night tour but decided to rest up and start fresh the next day.  The lodge had a great 360' view and Shelby and I woke up at 4:45 am to make the 30-minute hike up to this wooden deck.  It only took us about 14 minutes, we must be in good shape!  Hahaha. It was worth the hike and getting out of bed.  The boys slept in.  😴 We even caught some fog rolling through the mountains which made the view even more spectacular. I look forward to my morning coffee and planning my day, this view from the River House made it hard to plan anything except relax and breath... Our first full day, I booked a kayaking tour on the Belize River.  Our guide, Abel also does birdwatching tours and was very knowledgeable regarding the wildlife in the area.  The best part was hearing the Howling

HockaDONE!

August 2011, first day at boarding school.  She was so excited to start her new adventure.  I can't believe we let her do this.  It was so hard on us, to not see her everyday, be at her school for every little celebration or event.  But here we are three years later and we did it!  We ALL did it!! As they say at Hockaday we are HOCKADONE!!! Shelby wore the traditional white dress that all the Hockaday Seniors wear for graduation.  The dress is voted on by all seniors and a fashion show with models of all sizes showcasing the dress. In the years past the seniors would wear white hats with flowers and carry a flower basket.  However being the centennial year the girls reverted to the original hats of pastel colors.  Shelby chose yellow, my favorite color on her. The ceremony was outside and very humid....look at me glisten and let's not mention my hair.  uhg! Hockaday has century old traditions that are truly southern.  Here are some of the hats the girl
