Mother's Day 2014

John treated me to a Mothers serenade at the Wortham. The best part was Emilio performed with the Latin Philharmonic.  Being able to watch our son perform on the Wortham stage was magical.  Makes all those drives after school and weekend violin lessons worth every minute of it.  


Shelby presented me with a gift she made at school for me.  You would think that at age 18 she would have ditched those hand made gifts and just gone shopping but my super kid did both, shopping and a beautiful, thoughtful gift.

Senior Presentation Class of 2014 Photo by Cecilia Sheeren This fairy tale started six years ago......back when Shelby had braces, was finishing up the 6th grade and lived a life full of sleep overs, girl scout camp outs and the love and security of a two parent home. A pretty good and "normal" life by any standards.  A real suburban dream, however, there is not much growth in a bubble and as we all know our circumstances are not shared by all. August 2011, first day at boarding school.  She was so excited to start her new adventure.  I can't believe we let her do this.  It was so hard on us, to not see her everyday, be at her school for every little celebration or event.  But here we are three years later and we did it!  We ALL did it!! As they say at Hockaday we are HOCKADONE!!! Shelby wore the traditional white dress that all the Hockaday Seniors wear for graduation.  The dress is voted on by all seniors and a fashion show with models of all sizes showcasing the dress. In the years past the seniors would wear white hats with flowers and carry a flower basket.  However being the centennial year the girls reverted to the original hats of pastel colors.  Shelby chose yellow, my favorite color on her. The ceremony was outside and very humid....look at me glisten and let's not mention my hair.  uhg! Hockaday has century old traditions that are truly southern.  Here are some of the hats the girl

20 years and counting Chapter 3

Monday , August 28,  2017 ,  Strasbourg As John and I are enjoying new cities our own city is being bombarded with rain for 4 straight days. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.  Houston underwent a horrible deluge of rain from Hurricane Harvey.  Many creeks surround Houston and its suburbs and when 50 inches of rain fall these creeks overflow, and overflow, and overflow.   By day two we upgraded our phone plan to keep in contact with everyone back home.  Harvey made the world news and everyone in every country asked us how our family and home were once they found out we were from Houston.  It was surreal. Only one person in our family took in water.  Luckily she only received inches of water and not feet, like many others.  It was still hard to enjoy ourselves without thinking of all the water our poor Houston was receiving.
